How to Sprout Mung Beans

The process on how to sprout mung beans is so easy that kids do it for school science projects. While you can buy mung bean sprouts from the supermarket, maybe you would rather grow your own for the fun of it or to make sure they are fresh and grow in quality conditions. If you have kids, you can involve them in the process and bond.

  1. Prepare your materials

    You will need a ½ gallon mason jar or a similar container to sprout 1 1/3 cups of beans. A sprout screen is optional, but you may consider it a wise investment if you plan to sprout beans regularly. They are also affordable. Sprout screens are usually sized to fit over a mason jar. To hold it in place, you will need a canning jar metal band. Some sprout screens come with their own built-in lid. Some people use a stainless steel pot and strainer instead. You can also use a bowl covered with a light cloth, like cheesecloth or paper cloth. Some people recommend a container that drains at the bottom for convenience. Also, sprouts grow thicker when they are undisturbed.



    With a mason jar, you will need to upend it to drain.

    Mung bean sprouts are very popular, especially in Asia. They contain vitamins A, B, C, and E, amino acids, protein, magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium. They can sprout in two to five days and provide a yield of two cups of sprouts with a cup of seed. With this ratio in mind, prepare only an amount of beans that you can eat within two weeks.

  2. Sprout the beans

    Wash the beans in cold water under running tap water until the water runs clear. Drain the beans and place them into the container for sprouting. There must be two to three times more water than seeds. Soak the beans overnight or for eight to 12 hours. Drain well, rinse with cold water, and then drain again. Place the beans in a dim to dark area at room temperature. Do not place them inside a shelf or oven. A dark corner of your kitchen will do. Wait for the beans to sprout, and do not disturb them until you have to rinse and drain them. Rinse and drain every eight to 12 hours. Rinse longer on the first two to three days.

  3. Know when to stop

    When do you stop the beans from sprouting and start eating them? It’s up to you. The sprouts taste a little bit differently depending on how mature they are. Younger bean sprouts are preferred when eaten raw, like for salads. More mature sprouts are better cooked because some people find them bitter when raw. Some like to wait for leaves to show before consuming. Sprouts that are ¼ to ½ inch long take two to three days. One- to three-inch sprouts take four to five days. You can grow them even longer if you want. Note that they may not look exactly like the commercial sprouts. Those are grown in large vats with chemicals and gases. Special containers are used to keep the sprouts growing in a straight line. Your homegrown ones are likely to be curly but this is a minor matter.

As you can see, it is very easy to learn how to sprout mung beans. Sprouting is an easy way to have nutritious vegetables on hand, especially since sprouts are more nutritious than the seeds and are easier to cook.
