How to Start Eating Healthy

There are a lot of decisions to be made when you decide to start eating healthy. There are many food guides out there that tell you what you should eat and what you should avoid. Making these decisions to start eating healthy can be uncomfortable at times, since all of them require you to make some changes in your current eating habits. It is important to remember that the main principle in eating healthy is to pay attention to the foods that you put on your plate, sparing some time to think whether a certain food is healthy for you or not. If you want to learn how to start eating healthy, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Choose complex carbohydrates. If you are trying to lose weight, then you might be under the notion that carbohydrates should be avoided. This is true to some extent, since simple carbohydrates can quickly shoot up your glucose levels, as they are easily processed by your digestive system. However, simple carbohydrates, like processed pasta, white rice, bread, and sweets, are not the only type of carbohydrates. You should eat complex carbohydrates since they do not cause carb overload and are high in fiber, nutrients, and vitamins.

    Examples of complex carbohydrates that you should include in your diet are brown rice, wheat bread, green and leafy vegetables, and whole grain pasta.

  2. Eat some protein. Proteins help build muscles and are a great source of energy. You should get 10 to 15 percent of your daily caloric intake from proteins. Examples of healthy proteins include lean fish, legumes, soy products, nuts, and lean meat.

  3. Stock up on good fats. Not all fats are bad for your body. Avoid trans fats and saturated fats, which can be found in processed foods, since they increase your risk of developing heart disease. However, good fats do the opposite and actually improve your cardiovascular health. Good fats include those found in fish oils, olive oil, seed oils, avocados, nuts, and soybeans.

  4. Eat in moderation. No matter how many healthy foods you include in your diet, it will not do you any good if you eat too much. This also means that you can eat indulge a little in forbidden foods, such as fatty and sugary ones, as long as you control the portion sizes. Depriving yourself of a food that you really want will only intensify your cravings, so you can allow yourself to “cheat” a little.

  5. Drink lots of water. Your body is composed of mostly water, so it only makes sense that you should replenish your body with water. In addition, water is important for many of the body’s processes, and it helps in digestion and weight loss. Drink about 8 glasses of water per day. In addition, avoid soft drinks, juices, energy drinks, and other drinks that contain artificial sweeteners. It might be okay to treat yourself once in a while, but do not make them a regular part of your diet.

  6. Do not skip meals. Even if you limit your serving sizes, this does not mean that you should skip meals and healthy snacking. In fact, it is important that you always eat on time to keep your body satisfied and your metabolism at a steady rate. Even if it’s hard to wake up early in the morning, never skip breakfast because this gives you the boost that you need to last throughout the day.
