How to Stop Your Dog from Barking at Other Dogs

Barking is a natural reaction for dogs, especially when in the presence of strangers or other dogs. Most people consider barking as a sign of aggression, but in fact, there are a number of possible reasons why your dog barks. It may be due to excitement, fear, discomfort, hunger, or boredom. Nevertheless, you can train your dog to bark less at other dogs without punishing him or barking at him in return. Here are some things to remember if you want to know how to stop your dog from barking at other dogs:

  1. Keep calm when your dog barks. Whenever a dog barks at other dogs, most dog owners react by screaming at him to be quiet. In the eyes of the dog, this only motivates him to continue his behavior since he was rewarded with attention from his owner. Removing what motivates your dog to bark is an effective way of stopping this behavior. Hence, the next time he barks at other dogs, don’t react. Your dog will soon realize that his behavior does not merit your attention.

  2. Determine why your dog barks.

/i> As previously mentioned, there are several reasons that your dog may bark. Knowing the stimulus that causes your dog to bark will help you remove it so that it no longer stimulates your dog. For instance, if he barks because of the presence of other dogs, avoid encountering other dogs at first. However, this method is not effective in the long run, since you are bound to encounter other dogs when you walk around your neighborhood or in the park, for instance. Hence, it is important to desensitize your dog. You can do this by slowly exposing the dog to the stimulus and employing behavioral therapy. For example, every time another dog approaches, give your dog treats and stop feeding him as soon as the other dog is out of sight. Continue doing this for weeks. This will lead him to believe that the presence of other dogs leads to good things.

  3. Teach your dog how to be quiet. Before you can do this, you first need to train your dog how to bark on command. Tell your dog to “speak” and reward him with food when he barks. Follow it up with a “quiet” command, and once he stops barking, give him another treat. Continue doing this training until he easily follows your commands. You have to be patient while doing this and only use positive reinforcement to train your dog. Do not punish him as it will only make him scared and confused. Once he has mastered the technique at home, try to expose him to outside stimuli to continue his training.

  4. Engage your dog in different activities. Keeping your dog busy will make him less likely to bark at other dogs because of frustration or boredom. You can take a walk with your dog or play with him using balls and interactive toys. Always take time to play with your dog so that he will not be bored.

  5. Ask for professional help. If you have already tried training your dog but his behavior still has not changed, take him to the veterinarian to see if there are any other issues going on that may be causing your dog to bark all the time. For all you know, he might have a sickness that is causing his incessant barking. Consult a vet just make sure.

It will take time to learn how to stop your dog from barking at other dogs, but with constant training and supervision, he will eventually learn how to keep quiet in the presence of other dogs. Just stick to your training strategy and never falter until he learns the new behavior.
