How to Style Curly Hair

Curly hair, whether permed or natural, can be quite a challenge to tame. Because curly hair can easily end up looking frizzy and unkempt, learning how to style curly hair properly is necessary. There are two main issues you need to address when it comes to curly hair: frizz and dullness. Luckily, with the right hair care products and grooming techniques, your curly hair can turn out to be your crowning glory. Read the rest of the article for some valuable tips on styling curly hair:

    1. It all begins with the correct hair washing technique. Curly hair sucks in moisture so much more than straight or wavy hair, so opt for a shampoo that is rich and moisturizing. Follow it with an emollient leave-in conditioner. When you get out of the shower, gently towel dry your hair and use the cool setting to blow dry it. If needed, spritz on a hair detangling product. Naturally curly hair can be combed through with a wide-toothed comb. For permed hair, use your fingers instead to make the perm last longer. Stop blow drying when the hair is still a bit damp.

Don’t wait until it is bone dry.

    2. When your hair is about 90% dry, section it into four parts. Take each section and twist it to make a defined curl. Leave it like this until the hair is completely dry. This step helps keep the frizz down. You can create the curl sections before putting on your makeup to minimize prep time on busy mornings.

    3. The next step pretty much depends on the look that you want to achieve. For a soft, tousled beachy vibe, just rub some shine serum about 1/3 of the way down. You want to avoid loading product near the roots. The shine serum will add a healthy-looking sheen to your hair and keep it natural.

    4. If you would rather have a more textured look, warm up some styling clay between your fingers and work the product into small sections of your hair. When you are satisfied, flip your hair upside down, and then spritz with a volumizer to add lift.

The beauty of curly hair is that it takes so little to make it look styled. The curls already contribute to body and texture, so even the simplest hairstyles look glamorous. On those days when you literally have less than fifteen minutes to spend on your hair, you can try these effortless hairdos:
      1. The ponytail is perfect for keeping hair out of the way. Start with soft tousled curls (refer to step 3) then gather your hair into a simple ponytail. You can style it by varying the height of the ponytail (e.g. near the top of the head, at the nape of the neck), or making it a little off-center to get the fashionable side-swept look. Pin a brooch or small flower to it to up the glam girl factor.

      2. Curly hair can look sexy and tamed at the same time if you use a headband. Just groom the hair with some shine serum then slide the headband about an inch away from the hairline. You don’t even have to use a headband; you can experiment with silk scarves, chunky necklaces, or ribbons for a retro feel.

      3. The half-pony combines the best of two worlds: it keeps the hair away from your face, but still gives you the gracefulness of curls flowing over your shoulders and down your back. Just gather the hair starting from your hairline to your ears then tie it back with elastic. Take a section of hair right under the bundle and loop it around to conceal the elastic then pin it in place with a bobby pin. Smooth down the tied back part and the loose curls with a lightweight product.

No matter what your favorite tip on how to style curly hair, the most important thing to remember is moisture. Hair tends to frizz when it’s starving for moisture. Contrary to what most women assume, you shouldn’t skip moisturizing hair products when humidity is high. Parched hair is bound to absorb more water from the air.
