How to teach a cooking class effectively is something that can be learned, and how to be skilled in cooking can likewise be learned. Your innate talent and hobby in cooking must be deeply ingrained in your heart. That is what they call “cooking passion.” Though you may be a good cook or may have earned the degree of being called a master chef, if you do not have the true passion to share your skills with others, your cooking class will not be its best. The following steps can help you handle and teach your cooking class more efficiently:

  1. Earn a degree in culinary arts. A bachelor’s degree in culinary arts is a big factor when you want to teach in a cooking class.

  2. Earn units or a degree in pedagogy. It is not really enough that you are a graduate of culinary arts. Cooking is different from teaching. You may have the needed talent and skills in cooking, but if you do not know how to convey your knowledge and skills to your students, then you cannot possibly become an effective cooking teacher.

    “Pedagogy” refers to the art of teaching or the strategy employed in handling classroom instruction. Basically, the object of a pedagogy course is education. In the U.S. and in some parts of Europe, pedagogy is understood as a specific style of teaching or coaching.

    In teaching, do not expect your students to reach the level of your expertise all at once. This aspect is just a part of the many facets of teaching cooking class. In short, you must be patient, humble, and must go down to the level of your students while teaching them the intricacies of cooking.

  3. Prepare your kitchen tools, cooking utensils, and equipment. Teaching a cooking class can be done effectively if you do it hands-on. Your teaching approach must be real and actual. Thus, you need your kitchen tools and cooking utensils to properly demonstrate to your students how to prepare and eventually cook a particular dish.

  4. Have a class theme every day or every week. Teach from one cooking theme to another. Do not confuse everything by teaching one group of recipes to another all at the same time. According to some top-performing teachers in culinary arts,  having a good theme for the day or for the week so the whole cooking class can make various recipes that belong to a certain class of dish is best. For example, you can teach how to prepare different sauce recipes. No matter how many sauce recipes you finish, the thing is you only talked about one subject--making sauce.

  5. Be an expert in your recipes. Constant practice makes perfect. Even if you are a known master chef, you still need to polish your skills so you can meet the expectations of your students. In other words, you should be a true expert in your field. Never show to your class that there is something you are not so familiar with while teaching.

  6. Organize the presentation of your recipes. Systematize everything from one ingredient to another. Make sure that you present your cooking formula in accordance with your theme and within the time frame you allot for the subject. In so doing, you can be sure to meet your target or fill in any gap that you may have missed.

  7. Prepare everything before you start demonstrating to the class. First and foremost, check your equipment, cooking tools, and utensils. Do not use dull knives. Check your liquefied petroleum gas connection for leaks. If you have to prepare ingredients, while you chop them, let your students see how the items are being sliced.

  8. Stay effective in communicating to your class. Effective communication is a two-way process. Meaning, you cannot do the talking all the time. At some point in your class, you should listen when your students are asking questions and respond to them accordingly. Encourage them to actively participate in your discussion.

    Make your cooking demonstration lively. Share relevant stories regarding the recipe you are preparing. In so doing, you are actually promoting the eagerness of your students to learn.

  9. Give your students a taste of your recipe. After completing your dish, share it with them so they can taste what you made. Make sure that everyone receives a sample.

With the economic downturns happening left and right, you must not confine yourself with just one source of livelihood. As much as possible, have another source of income. If you are a good cook, go for cooking class teaching. That will allow you to earn more.
