How to Tell if Your Cat is Sick

How to Tell if Your Cat is Sick

Having a pet cat involves spending some time and effort on it. Cats are loving animals, which is why it is so easy to become attached to them. They are like babies, and they become dependent on you for their daily needs. As cats are noted to hide their pain or sickness, it is important to know how to tell if your cat is sick. These are some signs that must not be ignored:

  1. Most likely, your cat is sick if it suddenly becomes too lazy and constantly sleeps. If you are used to seeing your cat very active, you should be alarmed when it slows down abruptly. Physically check its body for anything unusual, but the best thing to do is to consult your veterinarian. He will know best and can prescribe the right medication.

  2. When your cat is suddenly very thirsty and pees more often, these are symptoms of some feral diseases like diabetes or kidney problems. Have its blood sugar checked by a vet to determine if it should take medication. Some need to be injected with insulin, and your vet will teach you how to properly administer it.

  3. Loss of appetite and sudden weight loss are also indicators that your cat is sick. Have your vet check on it just to make sure it is not suffering from any sickness. Cats tend to ignore or camouflage pain by being cordial with you, but deep inside, they are already feeling grumpy. The sad thing is, they only show they are sick when the condition is severe, so do not ignore small symptoms.

  4. When your cat purrs, it does not necessarily mean it is happy or excited. To some cats, it is an indicator of pain. Some shiver due to the very intense pain that they feel. Treat it as an emergency case and make sure it gets the right treatment and medication.

  5. Cats that are irritable, tense and stressed out might be sick. Their body language will suggest their condition. When typically playful cats seem lethargic, they are not feeling well. It’s not easy to tell what is causing the problem, so you need to consult the vet right away. Early detection means it can still be treated and you can expect to spend more time with your pet.

  6. When suddenly your cat cannot stand up and seems to have lost its strength, it could be terminally ill. Take it right away to the animal clinic or hospital and have it confined. Some still recover, but many do not survive. Therefore, do not wait for the worst to happen. Always be on the lookout for your cat’s condition on a daily basis.

Cats may not be as expressive to their pet owners, but there is always a way to detect problems.  All you need to do is be observant. They are usually good in hiding their pain and sickness, but you can still avoid the worst-case scenario if you know how to tell if your cat is sick.
