How to Travel to India

India is so vast that it is sometimes called a sub-continent. It has many tourist attractions, foremost of which is the beautiful Taj Mahal. Its diverse and colorful culture is another reason to visit the country and stay for a while. However, its size and culture may also be quite different from what you are used to. As an example, there are some areas that are very traditional where women are not allowed to wear revealing clothing or travel alone. Here are some tips for how to travel to India.

  1. Do your research

A country as vast and diverse as India has different characteristics, depending on the region. Given this knowledge, research the area you will visit so you can prepare by packing the appropriate items and comporting yourself properly while there. Aside from a passport, Americans will need an Indian visa before they can enter the country. Prepare photocopies of the bio-data page of your passport, as well as the pages with the Indian visa and immigration stamps. Those on a non-tourist visa or tourists staying for more than six months need to register at the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within two weeks of arriving in India.

Review your country’s foreign affairs website and that of India’s for up-to-date and accurate information. As much as possible, avoid areas of instability and restricted areas that are identified on the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs website.

  2. Prepare accordingly

When booking a hotel, consider the security not only of the hotel, but also of its surrounding area. Ask yourself if it is a hotel where you can walk around alone and if transportation is convenient. Research the tourist spots and religious sites you would like to visit so you have an idea of what to bring. Pack sunblock, insect repellent lotion, a first-aid kit, and medicines for common ailments like diarrhea, motion sickness, and fever. Depending on the area and time of your visit, you should consider getting immunized against rabies, yellow fever, typhoid fever, influenza, malaria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Japanese encephalitis.

Be aware that you need to dress according to the modesty expectations that are prevalent there. For example, Indian women wear knee-length or below-the-knee dresses, known as kurtas, with ankle-length trousers under them. You can also buy and wear Indian clothing once you’re there. They are light, affordable, and climate-appropriate. Note that swimming attire may also be different from what you’re used to. Pack loose, modest clothes and a jacket or shawl that you can use to cover up.

  3. Travel safely

As with all travel anywhere, practice safety measures while traveling in India. Be constantly aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile. Consider the level of security present when going to visit tourist spots and restaurants. Avoid displaying cash, jewelry, mobile phones, and other valuables. Keep your bags close and secure. Travel in groups and avoid using public transportation at night. Politely refuse food and drink offered by strangers. While you are encouraged to have fun, keep in mind that the legal drinking age varies among the Indian states and depends on the beverage type.

Be mindful of behavior that needs to be observed when visiting religious sites. There may be areas that are restricted to non-members or non-religious individuals. Remove your footwear and headgear, and cover up when requested.

India is a beautiful place to visit, and while travelling to India is a fun and informative experience, it can be quite a culture shock. You may not be able to act the same way that you are accustomed to acting at home, but this is part of the wonderful experience it is to travel to a foreign country. With these tips on how to travel to India, you will be able to prepare properly and have a hassle-free, enriching trip.
