How to Travel to Myanmar

There are so many beautiful countries lined up in Southeast Asia. If you want to visit this region, one of your choices is Myanmar, previously known as Burma. This country lies on the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea Coast. It is bordered by Bangladesh and India to the west, Thailand and Laos to the East, and China to the north. Some of the activities that you can do in this mystical country include exploring the Buddhist temples in Bagan, visiting the former capital Yangon, and cruising on the Ayeyarwady River, among others. For those who are interested in exploring the beauty of Myanmar, here are some instructions on how to travel to Myanmar.

  1. Select your mode of transport. The most popular and convenient way to go to Myanmar is by air. You can either fly to Yangon or Mandalay through Thailand’s Bangladesh Airlines, which often provides the cheapest fares to Myanmar. You may also enter Myanmar from Singapore through Myanmar Airways International. If you are coming from Thailand, you may also visit Myanmar by land, but you can only stay there for a limited time, making it inadvisable for foreigners to use this mode of transport.

  2. Get a visa. You need to secure a visa before going to Myanmar. Since February 2011, you can get a 28-day entry visa for Myanmar. The visa can be processed within the day. If you don’t have an embassy in your country, you can apply for an approval letter from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism online. Simply upload your photo and a scanned copy of your passport. The process will take roughly around two weeks and will only be applicable for those going to Myanmar though their international airports and not through the borders.

  3. Take note of the weather. The best months to visit Myanmar are from December to May, since the weather is dry during this time. However, it can be crowded during these times since this is the peak season. Myanmar enters the rainy season from mid-May to October, and it peaks during July with around 24 inches of rain. If you want to time your visit to be when the New Year Water Festival happens, plan to visit in April.

  4. Put aside money for expenses. Myanmar is one of the cheapest countries that you can visit in Southeast Asia. Myanmar’s currency is called the kyat, but for foreigners, the FEC or foreign exchange certificates are often used. This is a monopoly currency, especially designed for foreigners to better control the flow of the travelers’ dollars. One FEC is equivalent to one USD. The downside with this is that it is worth very little. That is why travelers prefer to have their dollars exchanged for kyats. You can use FECs or USDs to pay for hotels, tickets, and tourist attractions. You can use kyats for other smaller transactions. One USD is equivalent to about 980 kyats as of July 2013.

  5. Stay healthy and safe. People in Myanmar are not exactly the most hygienic people, at least by Western standards. Always stay safe by following basic precautions, such as eating and drinking clean food and water, and bring medications. Malaria, encephalitis, and dengue fever are endemic in the area, so be aware of your risks. It would be wise to take prophylactic drugs prior to visiting Myanmar.

Myanmar is definitely the place to visit if you are looking for a historical country to spend your time in. Always remember the aforementioned tips on how to travel to Myanmar in order to ensure a safe and hassle-free trip.
