how to treat a heart attack

Heart attacks are one of the leading causes of death all over the world. Among men and women, men are more susceptible to suffer heart attacks due to poor diet and other vices. How to treat a heart attack is not easy. The manner and how quickly a rescuer responds to the situation are very significant. The main causes of heart attacks include high cholesterol levels, smoking, obesity, eating unhealthy foods and hypertension. The common symptoms are chest pains, nausea or vomiting, fainting, high heartbeat rates, extreme sweating, coughing, dizziness and shortness of breath. When confronted with any of these symptoms, call for medical help right away. Below are important tips on how to deal with a heart attack correctly, anytime, anywhere.

  1. Memorize the emergency hotline or dial 911. This is very important, especially if you are alone at home. When a heart attack is likely to occur, call for help immediately. Avoid confining yourself in a room. Instead, stay in a place where you can be easily seen.

  2. Quickly assess the situation.

If you are still awake and can still respond, sit down and stay calm. Stay in a place where you can breathe fresh air. If you are wearing tight clothing, loosen it up to cool down the body. Ask for aspirin or nitroglycerin for chest pain and chew it right away.

  3. Perform CPR. This is from the point of view of the rescuer. If the victim is unconscious, immediately call 911 or any medical emergency hotline. After the call, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to at least revive the victim.

  4. Put the patient into the ICU. This is a precautionary measure. Even if the patient is conscious, it is wise to place him or her inside the intensive care unit (ICU) for the life support system. Administer oxygen right away.

  5. Administer blood thinners. In case the patient is in a coma, thrombolytic or blood thinners should be applied through an IV to remove blood clots in areas of the blocked blood vessels. This is important to restore natural blood flow.

  6. Neutralize the patientÂ’s condition. If the patient is experiencing chest pain, provide pain killers to alleviate the suffering. If the heartbeat rate is too fast, restore it to normal by providing beta blockers.

  7. Perform physical and laboratory tests. The tests may include MRI, CT scan, coronary angiography and electrocardiogram (ECG). These tests will reveal the cause or causes of the heart attack. These tests are important so that the doctor can properly assess if further medical procedures have to be conducted.

  8. Perform angioplasty or open heart surgery. On one hand, angioplasty is a medical procedure where the narrowed artery is inserted with a thin tube to restore natural blood flow. The inserted thin tube will broaden the artery and normal blood flow will be restored.

Open heart surgery, on the other hand, involves the removal of the blocked artery and replacing it with a vein that usually comes from the legs of the patient. This process is commonly called artery bypass surgery.

These are the steps on how to treat a heart attack. Whether the victim is yourself or anyone in the family, this guide is very much applicable. In any emergency situation, complacency is not an option. When responding, do not panic. Keep your focus and follow the steps as provided. Remember, your main goal is to revive the heartbeat back to normal while waiting for the medical team to arrive or before getting to the hospital.
