how to treat AIDS

AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a debilitating disease that one develops after acquiring the Human Immune Deficiency Virus through sexual contact (through semen or vaginal fluid), blood, or breast milk. It attacks the immune system, cripples it so that what would be a common, even benign, infection or disease to someone without AIDS would be fatal with someone who has it. AIDS could present itself years after the patient contracts HIV and could manifest in numerous symptoms, such as diarrhea, thrush, drastic weight loss, fatigue, nausea, chronic cough, and a white coating on the gums and/or tongue. Knowing how to treat AIDS means learning how to manage the symptoms that come with it. Here are the ways to treat the symptoms of AIDS:

  1. Look out for any symptoms. Be attentive to the frequency and duration for every new symptom that comes out. Note the intensity such as whether they are passing, mild, or severe.

  2. Call your doctor and inform them as soon as possible.

AIDS, like any condition, must be treated as early as possible. The first thing they will do is ask you about your condition. Next comes a complete medical examination. Laboratory exams will also be conducted, and you may have to give a sample of your blood. Your physician will need to know your current health status, viral load, and CD4 cell count.

  3. Look for infections. Be sure to avoid opportunistic infections, such as toxoplasmosis, pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), cancer, tuberculosis, herpes, syphilis, and others, which attack when the immune system is crippled or depressed, which is what happens when a person has AIDS. You also become susceptible to the Human Papilloma Virus or HPV and all the infections it causes. Your doctor should be informed immediately when an infections is acquired. Even the smallest sign of an infection should be reported as soon as possible.

  4. Stick to the treatment. AIDS treatment usually begins with antiretroviral medication followed by a set of appropriate medication depending on the extent of your condition and the symptoms. Antiretroviral drugs are designed to retard or slow down the progress of the disease and have been proven to lengthen the lives of AIDS patients.

Another a common type of medication for AIDS treatment is nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NtRTIs), which prevent the virus from infecting healthy cells. You must follow to the treatment program religiously. Together with a treatment program, your diet and lifestyle can affect the effectiveness of the treatment, so your doctor will prescribe a specific diet and exercise plan as well.

  5. Live a healthy life. Although AIDS in the worst stages can be debilitating, but it can be managed and one can still be functional and live a normal life as long as it is managed properly. One of the key things that makes this possible is maintaining a healthy lifestyle in terms of the food you eat, the amount of sleep and rest that you get, and your exercise routine. For example, alcohol and smoking must be completely eliminated. You must eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Patients must constantly hydrate or drink a lot of water. Consult your doctor for the best diet and exercise routine that suits you.

The main thing to remember about having AIDS is that even though the condition still has no known cure, the symptoms can still be managed with a good treatment program and healthy lifestyle. Learning how to treat AIDS requires commitment of both the patient and the patientÂ’s support system like the patientÂ’s family and friends.
