How to Treat Allergies in Dogs

How to Treat Allergies in Dogs

Allergies are not limited to humans. They are also common in dogs. Ever found your dogs scratching endlessly and wondered what is causing this behavior? Your dogs may be experiencing allergies already and you need to know how to treat allergies in dogs and spare them further suffering. Itchiness, endless scratching all over, watery and runny eyes, diarrhea, vomiting, snoring because of an inflammation in the throat and constant licking are only a few signs and symptoms that your dog is already suffering from environmental allergies. Some of these allergens are found in trees, dust, grass, cigarette smoke, feathers and perfumes. Even the food that you serve them can also cause their allergies. You need to know a few tips on how to treat dogs with allergies.

  1. Keep the environment clean. Some allergens can be prevented and wiped out which will be beneficial to both humans and dogs. Get rid of the dust that is found in the home and on your dog’s bed or resting place at least once a week. Vacuuming the rugs, carpets, mats, curtains and other key places that gather dust will also help to achieve a healthy environment for you and your dogs.

This will not only cure allergies but also prevent it from spreading.

  2. Grooming and bathing regularly. Bathing, brushing and other grooming elements will tremendously ease your dogs suffering. It will also naturally get rid of pollen, dust and other allergens that have already attached themselves to your dog’s skin. Do not allow your dog’s skin to dry out by using the wrong kind of shampoo when bathing. Consult the veterinarian regarding the appropriate shampoo for your dogs.

  3. Before using any anti allergy or antihistamine drugs, consult the vet first. There are several of these products which may be found in pet shops which can cure allergies; however, you do not want to further endanger your pet’s life by administering these to them without vet supervision. Prescribed drugs for allergy elimination become more effective when properly given and instructed by an animal physician.

  4. Watch and monitor their diet. Food such as chicken, pork, wheat and corn are also allergens; they can cause the allergies in your dog. It is better to avoid giving them these kinds of food rather than to sacrifice their health. Prepared dog foods are a better alternative for them.

Feeding them nutritious and healthy food, accompanied by supplements and vitamins, will do wonders for your dogs and boost their immune systems. This will fight off the allergens they may come in contact with. Another kind of supplement you can give your dogs is the fatty acid which comes in capsule, powder and liquid form.

  5. Prevention is always better than cure. Cliché as it is, this is especially true for both humans and dogs. Before you see signs of flea infections on your dog’s skin, perform a flea control and protection program. Your veterinarian should have the right knowledge on the specific flea control product you should use in and outside of the home.

When symptoms worsen even after you have treated them at home, call the nearest veterinarian for help. He will show you how to treat allergies in dogs for immediate care and relief.
