how to treat diarrhea in dogs

Dogs are man’s best friend, and it is alarming when they are not feeling all that well. Since dogs are prone to eating whatever they feel like eating, they are prone to sicknesses like diarrhea. As owners of dogs, you need to know how to treat diarrhea in dogs in the event that they get it. Diarrhea in dogs is almost the same as with humans. It is a loose bowel movement that occurs frequently in one day. There are two kinds of diarrhea. First is acute diarrhea, which often lasts 7 to 14 days. This can be treated at home. The second kind is chronic diarrhea, which lasts for more than four weeks. This can cause serious health issues and even death. If this is the case, take your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Treating acute diarrhea in dogs can be done at home. It is just like treating yourself (or your child) when you have diarrhea. Below is some advice on treating your dog’s diarrhea.

  1. Modify your dog’s diet. Since milk and dairy products can aggravate diarrhea, lessen or remove it from your dog’s diet.

  2. Cut in half the usual quantity of his solid food intake. This will give his digestive system a rest and allow it to recharge and be able to function well again. Don’t cut down the water intake however.

  3. Give him whole grains, fibrous foods, and plenty of protein. One common food that is given to dogs with diarrhea is pumpkin. This will aid in “forming” his stools.

  4. Avoid oily and fatty foods. For instance, if you are giving him meat, make sure it is chicken breast that is boiled and not fatty parts of pork.

  5. When preparing your dog’s food, make bland foods. You can just boil food, such as chicken or rice. Don’t add oil or seasoning. It will just aggravate the diarrhea.

  6. Hydrate your dog. Diarrhea can lead to dehydration due to loss of fluids. This can lead to death, so make sure that your dog drinks plenty of water. You can also give him over the counter hydrate solutions that you can mix with his water.

  7. Give probiotics to help generate a new batch of lactobacillus to help strengthen his stomach.

  8. Supplement with zinc to aid in developing a healthy immune system.

To avoid episodes of diarrhea, avoid abruptly changing or introducing new food to your dogs. Wean him slowly so that he will get used to the new food, and it will not cause intestinal discomfort. Also avoid giving them table food. Dog food is available for a reason. Dogs have their own needs, and they have a different body. Some components in our food might not suit them. Stress-causing things, such as moving to a new house, and change in daily routine can also cause diarrhea. By nature, dogs are fond of chewing anything. You have to make sure that the place does not have anything harmful to your dogs. Your garbage can should have a lid. Always keep the place clean. Be a responsible dog-owner and provide a healthy and safe environment. If the condition of your dog does not improve, bring him to the vet right away. Also check other warning signs, such as fever, blood in the stool, and persistent vomiting. Dogs have long been a part of our household and not just as a mere animal but as part of the family. We have a responsibility in taking care of them, so be sure to know how to treat diarrhea in dogs. This knowledge may even save your dog’s life.
