How to Treat Dog Allergies

How to Treat Dog Allergies

There are two things to look into when talking about how to treat dog allergies. Your pet dog might develop some allergies to food, dust, feathers or the environment, or it might be you who experiences allergies when you get near your dog. The symptoms and treatment of both kinds of allergies are similar, so this article addresses both issues. Read on for valuable input:

  1. Take notice of the symptoms. Allergies are manifested by itching, watery eyes, and sneezing, and sometimes the affected skin is swollen. Consult the veterinarian about your pet dog and let him or her give you the proper diagnosis and medication. Although you may have some idea on how to treat allergies, the dosage of the medication should be left in the hands of your vet to avoid complications. This also saves you the trouble of going through trial and error steps on the treatment.

  2. You can use the over-the-counter antihistamines that are designed for humans as they are also suitable for dogs. You just have to be careful with the dosage as these drugs tend to make your dog sleepy and weak.

Some allergies are so mild that even a single dose can solve the problem. Your dog will be up on its feet and back to its normal, energetic self in no time. But some allergies need prolonged treatment and a combination of various medications.

  3. At the onset of allergies, make sure that the surroundings and living area of your dog are clean. Disinfect them if you must because sometimes that helps to get to the root of the allergies. The allergies could be the result of unclean cloths used as bedding. Substitute them with fresh ones and wash them when it is time to replace them again. Make sure that your premises, including your yard, are clean as your dog may want to play there too. This is as good for you and your household as it is for your dog. A clean living space will keep you safe from the dreaded diseases and infections brought about by bacteria, parasites and viruses.

  4. Good grooming and proper hygiene are equally important. A dirty body is the favorite breeding place for parasites. It could be that the allergy is caused by fleas and mites that thrive on your dog’s body. The bites and irritation will make your dog’s skin swollen, especially when it scratches it ferociously enough to break it or cause lesions. The saliva of parasites like ticks is also noted to cause allergies as it brings with it various bacteria and viruses, not to mention some diseases. Give your dog a regular bath with a medicated or organic shampoo. Lather and massage the affected skin areas thoroughly. This will soothe the irritation and hopefully get rid of the parasites causing the allergies. Comb and groom your dog and apply lemon peel boiled in water for the finale. The smell of lemon is disgusting to parasites and it will make them go away. Do not rinse the mixture. Just let it dry on your dog’s skin and fur.

The above tips on how to treat dog allergies are simple, but need to be followed consistently. Cleanliness of the body and of the surroundings is a must for both dogs and humans. Treatment of their allergies involves similar steps. In cases when your doctor suggests that you cannot be near your pet dog due to extreme allergies, you have no choice but to pass on the responsibility of caring for your pet dog to other household members. This may be sad, but it is the right thing to do under the circumstances.
