How to Treat Feline Diabetes

How to Treat Feline Diabetes

Cats are simply adorable pets and you cannot help but become attached to them. It is just so sad when they are plagued with various diseases, especially when they get older. It is best not to ignore abnormal behavior, eating habits or anxieties your pet cat is showing. Your cat might already have diabetes. Don’t worry though; it is treatable. How to treat feline diabetes requires a lot of patience on your part in monitoring and caring for your pet cat.  Here is what you should do:

  1. As you are your cat’s constant companion, do not ignore unusual behaviors.  Peeing more often, eating more than usual, and weight loss are symptoms of feline diabetes.  Some even lose hair and seem to always be thirsty.

  2. Consult a veterinarian who is experienced with treating diabetes in cats. He should see your cat and assess the situation personally. Tests should be conducted to see if the level of sugar is abnormal. Your vet will prescribe some medication. Ask him how to administer it to your pet cat, especially when insulin shots need to be given.

ot hesitate to ask questions if something is not clear to you. This may affect your cat’s health and wellness.

  3. Ask your vet if a special diet has to be followed. Make sure you follow it and inform other members of your household not to feed your cat anything apart from the prescribed diet. You may have to stop giving treats to your beloved pet in the meantime. Should you be away for a considerable length of time, ask someone else to look after your cat’s medication and feeding.

  4. Regularly check the sugar level of your pet cat with the use of a urine strip. These are the same kind used by humans to check sugar level. A small amount of urine is dropped on the strip and the indicators will give a reading on how high or how low the sugar level is for your pet. This is mandatory as some cats treated for diabetes go back to a normal condition, which means you have to lessen or even stop the medications and the special diet.

  5. Sudden surges and fluctuations of the sugar level should also be monitored.  It can cause your cat to pass out or even have a seizure and die in the worst case scenario. Monitoring the sugar level can prevent this from happening.  There is really no need to confine your pet to a veterinary facility as long as its condition is manageable from home. This should not stress you out as most cats respond to medication right away and return to a healthy state.

  6. When your vet clears your cat of feline diabetes, make sure that it is not over fed again. Owners of older cats need to be more careful as they are more prone to diseases such as diabetes.

You might have observed that diabetes in cats, even in symptoms and treatments, is similar to diabetes in humans. How to treat feline diabetes is easy as long as you are equipped with information pertaining to its nature, treatment and care.
