The pain is brought about due to the abnormal flow of the food in the intestine. It may be moving too slow or have too low pressure. Either way, it causes discomfort like cramping, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation. Symptoms also include mucus in the stool. All these symptoms need not be present for you to say you have IBS. It will vary from one person to the other. If you suspect IBS, consult your doctor right away. Your doctor may give you medication for IBS. But most also recommend lifestyle changes so as not to aggravate your IBS. There are many factors that may contribute to this disorder. The most common are diet and stress. To be able to treat IBS, these two factors will play a big role; hence, it is of great importance that you commit to modifying your lifestyle.

Here are some steps to treat IBS.

  1. If you are suffering from diarrhea, decrease your usual intake of dairy products, such as milk and cheese. Since dairy products are good sources of calcium, which is very important in our body, consult your doctor about other sources of calcium and/or supplement for your body.

  2. Observe which foods aggravate your IBS. It may differ from one person to the other. Stay away from these foods once you discover them.

  3. Increase intake of fiber rich foods like brown rice, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. Eating fiber rich food will help digestion and promote smooth bowel movements.

  4. Be sure you drink plenty of water per day, at least eight glasses. Do not drink tap water if it is not clean in your area.

  5. Carbonated drinks, alcohol, chocolate, and fatty foods should be decreased or eliminated from your diet as they typically aggravate IBS.

  6. Eating yogurt, which has live microorganisms, aids in keeping you healthy. If eating yogurt does not lead to diarrhea, then make it a habit to eat it regularly. If not, you can take probiotic supplements.

  7. Eat small frequent meals. Too much food intake increases discomfort. You may opt to eat six to eight small meals rather than eating three big meals. This will make digestion easier.

  8. If you are experience bloating and gas, avoid food like beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and radish as well as drinks like grape and apple juice.

  9. Exercise regularly to be fit and healthy.

  10. Avoid too much stress in your life. Give yourself a treat and go for a therapeutic massage to relieve stress. Yoga, swimming, and walking are also good relaxing exercises.

Though IBS does not lead to any serious illness or other health issues, it can be very uncomfortable and painful to have all those symptoms. That is not the way to live a quality life. Check with your doctor and ask for a list of pointers to help reduce the symptoms of IBS. Overall, it’s all about a healthy lifestyle. Always choose a good diet and take care of your mental health. A sound mind and body is most likely to have less disorders or diseases. With the knowledge you have on how to treat irritable bowel syndrome, you can change your life around and stop letting IBS control your life.
