how to treat knee pain

Our knees can get injured easily. This is because it is the largest joint that handles major movements, such as standing, walking, sitting, running, and so on. Aside from that, our knees are also a weight-bearing joint, which means it carries the tension of daily activities. Therefore, it is not surprising that knee pain can occur. This is why you must be aware of the steps and tips on how to treat knee pain. There are several factors to consider when it comes to the common causes of knee pain. Generally, the pain comes from the fact that your knees go through a lot. Some factors can be stress, sports, excessive movement, lack of exercise, and many more. Most of the time, the pain is accompanied by inflammation, which is a big part of the healing process. Lastly, knee pain can be associated with other skeletal ailments, such as Osteoarthritis, Baker’s cyst, Osgood-Schlatter disease, etc. Here are some of the basic steps on how to treat your knee pain:

  1. If the pain is caused by a sudden injury, then follow RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate.

You should immobilize the injured knee to prevent further complications. The next step is to apply an ice compress for 10 to 20 minutes every three to four hours. It is best to put the ice bag on top of a thin towel to prevent frostbite. Then, use an elastic bandage to compress the injured area. Wrap the bandage 4 inches above and below the knee to aid better blood circulation. Lastly, elevate your knee by putting a pillow underneath it. This too will help blood circulation.

  2. You can also take medication to help alleviate the pain. There are a lot of over-the-counter drugs that are readily available for use. Acetaminophen, such as Tylenol, can be taken to help reduce the pain. You can also take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, which can be Advil or Motrin and naproxen like Aleve.

  3. Physical therapy is also another way to help treat knee pain. This method helps strengthen and stabilize the muscles that surround your knee. You can perform exercises that focus more on your quadriceps, which are located on the front of your thighs as well as your hamstrings, which are located at the back of your thighs. Also, these exercises will help you improve balance.

  4. Orthotics and knee braces can also be a solution to treat the pain. The support and immobilization of the knee can help reduce pressure on it.

  5. If the pain is accompanied by inflammation, it is best to consult your doctor. Oftentimes, it is the inflammation that causes the pain as it causes the surrounding muscles to crowd. An orthopedic can give you a prescription for corticosteroid medications, or he can inject it directly into your knees. The decision will depend on the severity of the condition.

  6. The last resort for knee pain that is unbearable is surgery. There are times that the cause of the pain can be unexpected growths in the knee area or maybe accumulation of fluids. If this is the case, the surgeon will have to operate in order to get rid of the underlying cause of the pain.

Whether it is as simple as immobilizing your knee or as serious as having a surgeon operate, it is always better to keep yourself well informed. There are a lot of ways on how to treat knee pain, and it is always good to be always prepared when circumstances ask for it.
