How to Treat Oily Skin

Oily skin is a common problem, and how to treat oily skin is something many people would like to find out. Oily skin condition is common both to adolescents and adults. It is a problem that needs care and attention. This article will provide information that could help you to overcome, or at least minimize, the problem. Oily skin generally holds true for the entire body, but it is in the face where the problem is more acute. For one, facial skin is more delicate and at the same time, more exposed. For another, facial skin has more sebaceous glands, which is why oily skin is more of a problem in the facial area. Although the problem may also occur in the back, chest, shoulders and neck, it can be easily hidden under clothing; not so for the face. Read on to find out how to keep oily skin problems to a minimum.

  1. Keep your face clean. Keeping a regular cleansing regimen is essential for keeping the problem under control. Use products specially made for oily skin. You may try astringents and toners, which work to clear the oil from your face; these come in many varieties, and some even come in pads that you just wipe your face with.

If you're female and use makeup, choose cosmetics that are intended for oily skin or are water-based.

  2. Try coconut oil. This is another school of thought on this topic. Some people swear by the effectiveness of coconut oil (available at the grocery store) for clearing up oily skin. It may sound strange, but applying a thin coat of it morning and night can actually help skin become less oily. Perhaps the science is this: alcohol-based cleansers strip the face of oil, thus stimulating the glands to produce more. Coconut oil, on the other hand, will keep the skin hydrated, and its anti-bacterial properties fight off irritations and infections, so that your skin actually becomes clearer.

  3. Watch your health. Diet is important. Although no particular food worsens oily skin, a diet that's high in saturated fat, sugar, refined starches, and salt can worsen the problem. So, too, does processed food. Drink plenty of fluid, especially water. The advice to drink eight glasses of water a day is healthy, in general, but it is even more so for those with oily skin problems, as it can help keep the skin hydrated and well toned. Exercise regularly. This helps keep the whole body healthy and better able to fight off infections. Plus, working up a sweat helps the skin to get rid of dirt. Just make sure that you wear a clean head band to keep hair and sweat from your face, and to always wipe with a clean towel. Also, take care not to wipe your face with a towel that you've used for your body. Aside from diet and exercise, get sufficient rest. This is important for your overall health.

It is best to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to this problem. Each person's body, lifestyle, and responses are different from others'. Find out what's best for you and maintain a regular regimen. Technically, of course, oily skin is not an illness, and there is no "cure" for it. It is a naturally-occurring process where the body produces sebum, or oil, to protect the skin. The problem occurs when oil is trapped together with dirt and bacteria, causing skin irritation, or worse, an infection. Learning to care for your skin will help minimize the problem.
