How to Treat Pregnancy Acne

One of the issues that women face when they're expecting is pregnancy acne. Some would think that pimples are mostly an adolescent phenomenon and will find it astonishing that these occur in adulthood, even for those who are about to become mommies. However, acne does occur among pregnant ladies. Hormone levels change during this nine-month phase and can cause the skin to produce more oil than usual, leading to clogged pores and, eventually, pimples. If you're one of those who break out during this crucial time of your life, let these tips on how to treat pregnancy acne help you:

  1. Clean your skin regularly and consistently in order to control sebum and keep your pores from clogging. You should use a gentle cleanser or skin care product that does not contain ingredients that may put your pregnancy at risk. Also, make sure the product is non-comedogenic, water-based, and is not abrasive. Wash your face twice a day with lukewarm water in the morning and at night, as recommended by the Mayo Clinic. Don't forget to wash after working out, too.



  2. Pat your face dry instead of rubbing the towel against your skin. This way, you avoid irritation and prevent early formation and fine lines as well.

  3. You will need to shampoo every day if your hair is oily. This is so that you won't develop pimples on your hairline or forehead. Also, you should keep your hair pulled back from your face. Wear hair restraints like hair bands, clips, or bobby pins, to keep wayward bangs or tresses from touching your face. Some mothers trim their hair short—you may consider this option too, especially if you want your personal care regime to be hassle-free for the next nine months.

  4. Never squeeze, pick, pop, scratch, or repeatedly touch the blemishes. Doing so will only aggravate them and may even cause scarring. You can minimize the temptation of touching the bumps by keeping your face clean. Or, if any of the nodules itch, you can press an ice cube against the affected areas, wash your face, or apply a mild toner or acne lotion.

  5. If you're using cosmetics, make sure they are non-comedogenic, which means they are formulated not to clog pores, and that they are oil-free. Also, you should wash your face once you're home or before you go to bed. Never go to sleep with any trace of makeup on your skin.

  6. Change your bed sheets and pillow covers regularly. This ensures that you keep your face clean even as you sleep and prevent acne formation.

  7. Keep your hands off your face. Make the extra effort to break the habit of touching your face unnecessarily. If you must, sanitize or wash your hands first. Or, you can use facial tissues to brush off food or some other substance from your face. Also, make sure that you don't let other things, such as telephone receivers or mobile phones, touch your face. You should clean these as well as your makeup tools regularly, so they won't introduce clog-inducing foreign debris to your face.

  8. You may use topical treatments that contain erythromycin, benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid. These substances are considered safe for pregnant women. However, if you have a special condition or want to make sure that you won't encounter complications, consult your doctor or dermatologist on the best product to use.

  9. Avoid using products with retinoids, isotretinoin, tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline during pregnancy as these may affect fetal development.

Despite learning how to treat pregnancy acne, you should always remember to consult your doctor first before using any acne treatment so that you keep your bundle of joy safe and healthy throughout your pregnancy.
