How to Treat Rhinitis

Rhinitis occurs when the lining of the nose is irritated or inflamed. As a result, the person has a runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezes a lot, and has an itchy nose, throat, or roof of the mouth. The two types of rhinitis - allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis - are differentiated according to their causes. Allergic rhinitis, as the name states, is caused by allergens or substances that a person is allergic to, like shellfish or pollen. With non-allergic rhinitis, it is a bit more difficult to identify the cause: The condition is not triggered by an easily identifiable allergen. Sufferers of non-allergic rhinitis can have rhinitis symptoms because of cigarette smoke, dust, odors like strong perfume, or weather changes — basically anything that can irritate the mucus membranes in the nose. It is recommended that they get rid of carpets, stuffed toys and cloth-upholstered furniture. Food allergies can be avoided by being conscious of the ingredients in food. Keeping an allergy diary to log allergens and situations that trigger symptoms is beneficial in the long term.

  4. Consider alternative remedies

    Some people who have had allergic rhinitis have been cured by acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Others, who prefer natural remedies, swear by butterbur supplements. Butterbur is a plant that belongs to the daisy family. Vitamins C and D, aloe vera, stinging nettle, ginkgo biloba, evening primrose, bromelain, Echinacea, chamomile, and quercetin are also taken for the treatment of allergies. Probiotics are often consumed by those with food allergies to increase their production of healthy bacteria. As with any treatment, make sure to consult your doctor as you might have an allergy to any of the previously-mentioned substances.

    A homemade nasal saline rinse might provide relief from rhinitis symptoms as well. In eight ounces of warm water, mix a quarter teaspoon each of salt and baking soda. Squirt four ounces of the solution through one nostril then let it come out of the other nostril. Do it again for the other nostril. This rinse can be performed multiple times in a day.
