How to Treat Rosacea

How to Treat Rosacea

Rosacea is a condition of the skin that causes it to turn reddish. There are several types of rosacea, but the general symptoms are redness of the face, nose, ears and scalp; acne; thickened skin; and dry, itchy eyes. Sometimes, the eyes are affected so much that blurred vision and loss of eyesight are the unfortunate results. Other times, the symptoms are so mild that the person doesn’t even know that they have rosacea. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for rosacea, but it can be treated. Here are some ways on how to treat rosacea.

  1. Avoid flare-up triggers

There are some circumstances that cause rosacea symptoms, situations that induce redness because they make the blood vessels expand. These include drinking alcohol, exercising, eating spicy food, taking a hot bath, and being exposed to wind and sun. Sudden temperature changes from hot to cold and cold to hot trigger symptoms as well. Avoiding the triggers will stave off the onset or worsening of the symptoms. If you do not know your triggers, keep a diary of foods you eat, what you drink, and your activities so you can see a pattern of what causes breakouts.

Your doctor will help you identify your triggers.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t exercise if you have rosacea. When you work out, bring a frozen water bottle with you and press it on your neck and face from time to time to control skin flushing. For those who notice that rosacea flares up when they are stressed or anxious, work on relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, yoga, and meditation. If you notice stinging when you apply a product, stop using it and switch to skin products for sensitive skin. For those who wear makeup, mineral makeup has been shown to be gentlest on skin with rosacea, especially makeup that doesn’t contain bismuth oxychloride. You can also try makeup that can camouflage the redness and skin marks.

  2. Try antibiotics

Your dermatologist is likely to give you a prescription for an antibiotic that can be applied to the skin. Common medications include active ingredients like metronidazole, sodium sulfacetamide-sulfur, and azaleic acid. These are more effective than over-the-counter pimple medications.

For those with severe rosacea where a lot of blood vessels are inflamed and painful cysts are present, they can be prescribed with oral antibiotics as well, like tetracyclines and erythromycin. They help lessen the inflammation, especially when the eyes are affected.

  3. Treat rosacea on the eyes

For those whose eyes are affected by rosacea, you will need to go to an eye specialist. They will prescribe lubricants in the form of eye drops or ointment if your eyes have gone dry. For those with inflammation of the eyelids, you will be taught to clean your eyelids with a towel or a cotton bud soaked in warm water.

  4. Consider dermatological procedures

There are two procedures that help alleviate the appearance of obvious blood vessels under the skin. They are Pulsed Dye Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light Lasers (IPL). They also help with flushing, redness, and threadlike veins that oral and topical antibiotics cannot treat. The light beams help shrink the veins so they no longer stand out on the skin. Note that these procedures can be costly and may not be covered by your health insurance.

Make sure that you consult and keep in touch with your dermatologist as they help you on how to treat rosacea. They can help you identify for sure that you are suffering from rosacea and not acne, allergies, or irritation as a result of other factors. More often than not, you will have to monitor your skin for rosacea flare-ups for a long time.
