How to Unlock Motorola Cell Phone

When we buy a cell phone like Motorola from a specific service provider, it is usually locked. This means that you cannot use any the phone with any other service provider than the one the phone is already linked to. This can be a hassle, especially if you want to change providers but want to keep your Motorola phone. If this is the case, then you should learn how to unlock a Motorola cell phone. Having an unlocked phone gives you flexibility. Frequent travelers will definitely benefit if their phones are unlocked. They can use SIM cards and other service providers with their phones as they travel and switch as necessary instead of buying a different cell phone each time. Unlocking your Motorola phone ultimately can save you money and give you more options. The resale value of your cell phone will also go up when compared to a locked phone. However, there are also disadvantages of unlocking your phone. Doing so is considered a form of tampering. This means that whatever warranty the phone has is most likely no longer valid. If ever your phone malfunctions, you cannot depend on the warranty for repair or replacement.

Also, when unlocking your phone, you have to be very careful not to damage your phone. There are instances when unlocking causes a phone to malfunction permanently. Below are the steps to unlock your Motorola cell phone.

  1. Charge your Motorola cellphone until the battery is full. The reason for this is that the unlocking process may use up a lot of the battery juice and could possibly damage your phone if it runs out of battery in the middle of the process. Back up any important information stored on the cell phone should the memory be erased by mistake.

  2. Go online and head to the Motodev website. Register and create an account. It’s free so you don’t have to worry about paying any fees.

  3. Download the USB Driver Installer software specifically for your Motorola cellphone. Once downloaded, run the software and follow the instructions prompted for the installation. This should only take a few minutes.

  4. Open the software. Connect the cell phone to the computer with a USB cable connector.

  5. Select clean and install. Then click start. This will clean up all information stored in your phone.

  6. Search for the P2KMan software and install it. Your windows will automatically recognize the hardware, so click install software automatically. Windows will recognize hardware again; just click the install software automatically again. The software will now recognize the Motorola phone.

  7. Press the star key and the pound key while turning your cellphone on.

  8. A new hardware will again be recognized. Click install automatically. This will install the program needed on your phone.

  9. Check if you are using the latest or at least version 7 of Motorola bootloader.

  10. Using bootloader, restart your phone by pressing the star key, pound key, and start key. Look for the icon for moto unlocking software and then click to connect.

  11. You will then see the word unlock. Click it and then the software will start unlocking your phone.

  12. When it’s done, you are now free to use your Motorola phone with provider’s SIM card.

Depending on the model of your phone, sometimes unlocking will not work. If it doesn’t, you can go to the service provider and ask them to have your phone unlocked. You can also hire someone who knows how to unlock Motorola cell phone to help you do just that.
