how to use an inhaler

Inhalers treat respiratory ailments, such as asthma. They can give patients immediate relief, especially those who have difficulty breathing due to their sickness. There are three types of inhalers: metered-dose inhalers, small volume nebulizers, and dry powder inhalers. It is vital that you know how to use an inhaler for it to be effective. First is the metered-dose inhaler. This type of inhaler has medication inside the container, which is pressurized.

  1. Take off the cap and hold the canister in an upright position and then shake it.

  2. Tilt your head backwards then breathe out.

  3. Hold the inhaler and press down. Slowly breathe in to inhale the medicine being released.

  4. Slowly breathe for about three to five seconds.

  5. Let the medicine penetrate deep into your lungs by holding your breath for 10 seconds.

  6. Repeat the puffing procedure as instructed by your doctor.

  7. Allow at least a one-minute interval between each puff.

Next is the small volume nebulizer. Unlike the metered-dose inhaler, you have to place the prescribed medicine inside. A mist with the medication will be released through a mouthpiece. Then you can inhale it.
    1. First is to assemble the machine. Make sure that your hands are clean when you are doing this.

    2. As prescribed by your doctor, measure your medicine and add saline if instructed to do so. Place this in the medicine cup provided in the machine.

    3. Connect the tubes and mouth piece to the medicine cup.

    4. Turn on the machine. Make sure that the medicine cup is in an upright position. Check if there is mist coming out of the mouth piece to make sure that itÂ’s working right.

    5. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and take long deep breaths. The medicine will last for about 10 minutes or so. Make sure that all is consumed.

Last is the dry powder inhaler. Tiny granules of medication are present in the device. This is very similar to the metered-dose inhaler.
  1. First thing to do is to remove the cap of the device.

  2. Pull or slide, depending on the type you have, the lever to load the medicine.

  3. Twist your head sideways and deeply exhale. Make sure you breathe out as much air that you can.

  4. Place your mouth in the device and close your lips tightly to make sure a tight seal. This is to make sure no medicine comes out.

  5. Puff the medicine deep and fast to ensure that the medication goes straight into your lungs. Afterwards, slowly breathe out.

  6. Repeat procedure if necessary. Each dose interval should be one minute apart.

Among the three, the dry powder inhaler proves to be the most efficient one to use. It is easy to use and has many other helpful features. With the metered-dose inhaler, it needs timing and proper coordination to ensure that you get the medicine into your lungs. With the dry powder, you basically just open, pull the lever, and puff. Then you are assured you get most of the medicine. What is even better is it has a lactose component that adds flavor to the medication so you know that you are actually inhaling something.
