Many artists have established their own styles when using oil paints and have established a unique trademark. For beginners, you have ample of time to discover your strengths in painting. For a good head start, here are some tips to help you.

  1. To begin, have a clear picture of what you want to create. Start with a simple drawing but one that requires a lot of color blending. That is where the magic of oil paint lies.

  2. Make sure to purchase some good quality oil paints. There are student quality paints readily available for beginners.

  3. Now, you have to choose brushes. Beginners can start with big soft brushes. These will blend the oil paint well.

  4. You will need to purchase turpentine, sansodor, or some type of paint thinner.

Many artists find liquids more convenient as they dry quickly. The best thing to do is to try as many as you can and find out what kind best suits you.

  5. You will also need a flat surface to support your painting. Many artists use an easel.

  6. Once you have everything you need, start lightly drawing what you want to paint. Use light strokes because they are meant to serve just as a guide. Concentrate more on the general outlines; it doesn’t have to be too detailed.

  7. Start with lightest paint color. To make a thin wash, add in a little turpentine to your paint. Make sure you don’t use too much paint as it may take a long time to dry.

  8. Work your way to darker colors and make bolder layers as you continue. You can be more detailed to make the painting look more realistic. Since oil paint doesn’t dry quickly, you have enough time to blend the colors. If your work is more abstract, it is best that you don’t emphasize the details.

  9. If you are painting something more complicated, the best thing to do is to wait for the whole painting to be completely dry before adding more minute details. Keeping it neat and making sure that you are incorporating the paint well are the keys to success.
