Want to have a free fertilizer that is available all year round? You already have it – human urine! Why waste it when it can be put to good use? It has been an old practice in human history that plants and trees are fertilized by urine. How to use urine as fertilizer does not require much effort. There are just some basic things you have to know for its proper application. Read through to know more:

1. Gather fresh urine everyday using a tightly sealed plastic container. You will know that it is fresh when it doesn’t smell. In fact, it is bacteria-free and sterile. Just do not expose it to contaminants by moving it around without a tightly lidded container. Do not re-use containers for a long time; if the container is not thoroughly cleaned, it can spoil the urine easily.

2. Do not store urine for more than 24 hours. Old urine creates a higher ammonia level that is harmful to the plants. Even if there’s a strong smell from the fresh urine from eating garlic or asparagus, it is still good for the plants. Once you start fertilizing your plants, do it regularly on a daily basis.

3. Dilute one part urine to ten parts water for delicate plants. Urine has sufficient nitrogen content that can burn the leaves of tender plants. Whether it’s pure or diluted urine, it must be used immediately before it starts breaking down to produce ammonia.

4. Do not spray the urine all over the plants. Concentrate watering around the base of the roots, diluted or not. Diluted urine can be used to water plants in pots as well as the ones in hanging containers. Delicate plants can be watered with urine daily, as long as it is diluted. Avoid letting the urine fertilizer settle along the plant roots for a long time. They must be drained through the soil at once.

5. Observe if the leaves of the plants have turned yellowish. If you think that they are struggling instead of flourishing, add more water when diluting urine for fertilizer. The plants may be receiving too much nitrogen from the urine. When fruity plants fail to produce fruits but become lush, reduce the application of diluted urine fertilizer.

6. Predators can be kept out of your plantation using urine from your male family members. Since animals are territorial, they will take this as a marker for private ownership – telling them to keep out. Splash some traces of pure male urine in the areas to be protected. Replenish them when washed out by rain.

7. No need to dilute the urine fertilizer for shrubs, lawns and trees. Vegetation for food must not be fertilized with urine for at least two weeks before harvest for obvious reasons. Avoid applying urine at the foliage of plants that bear fruits.

8. Unused urine after 24 hours will not be good for your plants anymore. The urea has already turned into ammonia by then. This can burn your plants. Add old urine to the compost heap instead. Undiluted human urine will heat it up quickly as a great activator. It will also add to the general nutrient value.
