How to Walk in High Heels

Are you looking for a miracle solution that will make you look thinner and curvier in just seconds? There is one: put on a pair of high heels. It instantly pulls in your thigh and calf muscles so that your legs look more toned, and it throws your weight back so that you are less likely to slouch. The extra inches also lengthen the body frame, making you appear leaner. Of course, the sexiness of towering footwear is ruined if you don’t know how to walk in high heels. Supermodels on the runway make it seem easy, but it really isn’t that simple. With platforms now considered a wardrobe must-have, four- and five-inch heels (which used to be taken out only for red carpet events) are now rightly considered street wear. If you need help, read the tips below. Take them to heart and, soon enough, you’ll be able to sashay instead of stumble.

  1. Walking in sky-high Louboutins may be your dream, but unless you were born in spike heels, you need to work your way up to that goal. Start yourself off with shoes that have low, wide heels. For the time being, stay away from kitten heels and wedges.



    so, pick a pair of shoes with some flex in the arch of the foot, and preferably something with a cross strap or an ankle strap to provide greater stability. Foot beds that are rigid will make it harder for you to keep your balance.

  2. The easiest walking surfaces you can practice on are hardwood floors and carpets. When walking in heels, your chin should be up, your chest out, and your stomach pulled slightly in. With toes facing forward, take a few steps. The first part of the shoe that should hit the floor as you step should be the ball of the foot. Take shorter steps while you get used to the extra height. Look straight ahead and let your hips and shoulders swing as naturally as you can. As you become more comfortable, make your stride longer and quicker.

  3. Once you get used to your starter pair of heeled shoes, you can move on to higher wide heels or try kitten heels or wedges. Again, practice walking in them until you are confident enough to wear them outside the house for a few hours at a time.

  4. Go with progressively higher heels until you reach your limit. Most people’s heel limit is influenced by the height of their foot arch. Generally, the higher your arch, the higher you can go. (In fact, some high-arched women say that they find heels more comfortable than flats.) To determine whether a certain pair of heels is still within your limit, perform this simple test: While wearing the shoes, stand up straight. Try to stand on your toes so that you can create at least one inch of space between the foot bed and the underside of your foot. If you can’t do this, then the shoes are too high for you.

  5. Train yourself by wearing your highest pair of heels every day for 15 to 30 minutes. Practice walking around the house and going about your normal business in them. Soon enough, you will find yourself more at ease. Once you know that the likelihood of tottering or stumbling is low, try wearing them out of the house on occasions where you will have a chance to sit should you get tired.

We leave you with two cheats which even supermodels use: one, platform heels are your best friend—they give you a taller heel silhouette while taking some of the pressure away from the balls of your feet. Two, pack a back-up: a roll-up pair of flats which you can wear when you have to walk a long way or can change into when your feet need a break. It may seem discouraging to have to learn how to walk in high heels, especially when you compare yourself to women who can run in them. However, note that Victoria Beckham and Sarah Jessica Parker can only effortlessly wear five-inch heels because they have been doing so for years.
