How to Wear Clip-In Hair Extensions

Wearing clip in hair extensions allows you to create an instant new hairstyle. While this may be convenient for most people, there is always the danger that your extensions might look fake, raising the eyebrows of those checking out your new hairdo. That is precisely why you need to know how to wear clip in hair extensions properly. Here are some tips on how to do just that:

  1. Prepare your natural hair by washing and conditioning it. It is often easier to wear curly or wavy hair extensions since they tend to blend well with your natural hair. Hence, you should curl your natural hair to match the extensions. When choosing a clip in hair extension, you should make sure that it matches the color and texture of your natural hair to make it as believable as possible.

  2. Separate your hair into two sections – upper and lower sections. You can do this by starting the partition at your left temple, then moving across the back of your head all the way to the right temple in a straight line. To keep the upper section from falling down, secure it with a clip at the top of your head.

  3. Tease the hair at the scalp using a small-toothed comb. This will make a sort of cushion to secure the clip of the hair extension. This is especially important for people who have very fine or naturally straight hair. You can also apply medium or strong hold hair spray on the teased area so that the hair stays in place.

  4. You can now place the first track of the clip in hair extension on the teased area of your hair. Slide the teeth of the clips into your teased hair. Keep the clip in hair extension as close to your scalp as possible. The track will have two to four clips, depending on its width. Start closing the clips from the right side of your head to the left side and then press the track flat on your scalp. You should hear a tiny snap, indicating that the track has been secured in place.

  5. Once you have secured the first track, you can attach the second track about 1 to 1 ½ inches higher than it. Part off another inch of your hair, tease it, and attach the clip in hair extensions. You can attach up to four tracks of clip in hair extensions to your hair.

  6. Once all the clip in hair extensions have been placed, you need to style your hair in such a way that your natural and artificial hair blend well together. Gently comb your hair to blend it. Also, comb back a little at the crown of your head to give your hair some volume and height. You are now ready to flaunt your new hairdo to everyone.

When learning how to wear clip in hair extensions, you will note that practice makes perfect. Practice placing the tracks on your hair before you actually need to use them. This will save you a lot of time on the day when you need to style your hair perfectly. If you use clip in hair extensions every day, you will master different techniques for styling your hair. Should you fail to get things right after several tries, you can always call your hairstylist to lend you a hand.
