Whether you are about to finish your college degree or your master’s degree, it will be an advantage on your part to know ahead of time how to write a good thesis paper. By the time you will finally be required to do so; you will find it very easy to complete your thesis paper. Generally, a good thesis is composed of the Title Page, Copyright Page, Signature Page, Abstract, Table of Contents, Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, and References. To make the process a lot easier for you, just go through with the following thesis writing guide.

  1. Choose a good topic. Although oftentimes it is the instructor who provides the topic, there may be time that students are given the chance to choose their own topic. In either case, your topic should be something that interests you so you’d find it worthwhile working on your thesis. See if your chosen topic is a little broader and, if so, proceed to narrowing it down.


    For example, if your topic is about “U.S. legislation” you have to narrow it down because legislation per se is very broad. Remember that the U.S. Congress is bicameral in nature which means there are two houses, the Upper House (Senate) and the Lower House (House of Representatives). It will take you too long if you will try to discuss comprehensively the legislation process in both houses. To narrow down your topic, studying “The intricacies of the legislation process in the U.S. House of Representatives” looks more specific and more workable.

  2. Conduct wide-ranging and systematic research. Your research must be comprehensive enough in a way that you have to gather sufficient reading materials for your topic, and systematic in a way that you should know where to go first and where to search next.

    For example, your first stop is the Internet. You can navigate to www.google.com and www.wikipedia.com for more encompassing information about the topic. The second stop is the public library. Then the third stop refers to the resource persons and expert professionals you need to interview about the topic.

    In the cited sample topic, you should visit the Congressional library for more research materials. Also, if you have access, you should be personally interviewing a few congressmen. It is much better if you could attend several actual sessions of the House of Representatives.

    In particular, POWER is a very useful writing guide. The acronym stands for Plan, Organize, Write, Evaluate, and Revise.

  3. Make an outline. There are at least four major parts of your thesis writing which you should focus on. These are the Introduction, Methodology, Results & Discussion, and Conclusion. Your outline will serve as your guide while you are reading your materials and as you begin writing your thesis draft. Admit that you are not Superman to be able to read everything that you have gathered.

    While you are trying to figure out your outline, on the assumption that you have dissected properly all relevant points in your research materials, what you are trying to make is actually a draft.

  4. Write the ABSTRACT. It should contain a very short, usually not exceeding one page, summary of your thesis. Should you prefer, you may choose to do this in the latter part of the process.

  5. Write the INTRODUCTION. You should be able to incorporate three important things into the introduction: a general presentation of your thesis problem, a clear statement about what you’d like to achieve in your thesis and the direction you will go, and an emphasis about your position or intent in writing on the topic. These three items must be written in individual paragraphs.

    If you find it harder to work on the introduction first, you can actually accomplish it later. There are students who prefer writing the introduction to serve as a quick summary of the topic after they have completed the writing.

  6. Write the METHODOLOGY. This refers to the research design to be used in your study. Your research method will largely depend on the field of study you have. For instance, the apparatus-based methodical approach needed on a physical science study is not really the same with the research and observation method used in a social science study like the sample topic on “U.S. legislation.”

    If you conducted surveys as part of your method, your set of questions must be included in your thesis as an appendix.

  7. Write the RESULTS & DISCUSSION. It can either be qualitative research or quantitative research. If qualitative, the discussion can be a little broader   without touching on minute details anymore. If quantitative, your presentation of the numerical results must be precise and accurate. To have a clearer presentation, you can use graphs and tables in analyzing the data. In every table and graph, it must be followed by a description, analysis, and commentary.

    The ideal way of presenting your thesis is to connect your discussion back to the introduction. A good discussion should cover four things:  clear responses which address the individual points raised in the introduction, an elaboration on the findings, an explanation of the data gathered, and your personal understanding and interpretation of the data.

  8. Write the CONCLUSION. This is where you will finally build up your discussion. It is where you are going to refer your research findings to others and to the rest of society in general. In case you are required to provide short recommendations, you can make your own suggestions. This may be done in order to improve the kind of research design adopted.

    In a typical, short paper requirement, the conclusion may be contained in just two to three paragraphs or even shorter than that.  For a dissertation paper, the conclusion is deemed as the most significant part of the whole research paper. Hence, the conclusion must discuss and describe in detail the research results and must clearly emphasize the significance of the said results.

  9. Accomplish the REFERENCES. The thesis paper is incomplete without the list of references documenting the sources and materials used. The references shall appear on the last or final page of the thesis paper. If there is a format you are required to follow, either APA or any other format, just follow it.

  10. Write the TABLE OF CONTENTS. The page number usually starts right on the Table of Contents. You choose where to locate the page number either on the top of the page or bottom of the page depending on the pagination requirements of your instructor.

  11. Proofread the draft at least twice. The easiest way to proofread your thesis is to use a spell check or grammar software program. After that, do another round of proofreading. Check on the word count to make sure you have written more than the minimum requirement.

  12. Finalize the thesis paper. After printing your thesis, make sure you have a separate, hard copy of your own. In case the file in your computer gets corrupted, you still have an extra copy.  Also, save your thesis in a separate USB or universal serial bus.

A thesis is one of the major school requirements that must be complied with so that a student can finally graduate either in his or her undergraduate course or master’s degree.  Although there are certain universities that have specific styles in thesis writing, the above-enumerated parts are, however, the most common components that every thesis must include. There are still more tips on how to write a good thesis paper, but the steps identified above should be more than sufficient to produce a good thesis paper requirement.
