how to write a letter to Santa Claus

Christmas is right around the corner and, as is usual this time of year, Santa makes his list and checks it twice. Kids also make their lists. And so do moms. Writing a letter to Santa enables that busy old gentleman to keep track of who wants what. It helps his elves know what toys to make and prepare. So, it is important to let Santa know what you want. Santa is a good and generous guy, but you know he is busy and tends to forget a lot of things. Here’s how to write a letter to Santa Claus to get you started.

  1. Let your mom know what you’re doing. Sure, it would be nice to ask Santa in secret and have your wish be known only between you and him. But there are certain things you need to know and do when writing a very important letter such as this. For example, you would need help in writing the letter itself, in writing the address and in mailing and posting it. Santa has all the necessary networking and online tools. But when it comes to writing him your Christmas list, your best bet would still be the old fashioned way of writing a letter.

anta is an old guy. He likes things done in a traditional way.

  2. Greet Santa in a friendly and respectful way. In letters, this is called the salutation. It could be something as simple as “Dear Santa.”

  3. Politely ask about how he’s doing. Politeness counts high on Santa’s “Good” deeds, because it shows that you are not a selfish brat who thinks only about yourself. When Santa hears from you, he wants to hear from a friend. As you would do when talking with a friend, you should ask about him, his family (Mrs. Claus), his pets (his reindeer) and his friends (the elves).

  4. Give him news about yourself, too. That’s what friends do. They update each other about what’s going on in their lives. This would also be the place to remind him of the good you've done during the year, in case someone messed up and forgot to add it. Santa will want to hear about your family, pets and friends, too. Make your letter interesting because Santa works very hard. Getting letters makes him happy. Try to do good for Santa as he is good to you.

  5. Now you can ask him for the toys you’d like. Again, be polite. Being rude and demanding will get you into the “Bad” list faster than a speeding train. Now, here’s where you need Mom’s help the most. See, Santa rides a sled pulled by reindeer. He can’t bring a whole bag full of toys for a single child. You need to leave space in the sled for the other children. Besides, being greedy will also get you into the “Bad” list. So think carefully about what to ask for, and then list the top two or three that you really, really want. Consider that Santa may not be able to give you what you ask for, because his elves do not always have everything. You have to be patient and try to be understanding.

  6. As you end your letter, remember to thank Santa for his kindness and generosity. When you think about it, Santa doesn't get paid and he isn't related to you. He just loves you and wants you to be happy. So tell him that you appreciate what he’s doing for you and other children. It would also be nice if you could promise something you will do in the next year to be good. For example, always make your bed in the morning, or put away your toys at night, or brush your teeth without being told. And you must mean it, of course.

Sign your letter with your name and age.

  7. Ask your mom for an envelope, write the address on it, stamp and seal it.

After you've learned how to write a letter to Santa Claus and have finished the project, your mom will mail the letter for you at the Post Office.
