Yoga’s increasing popularity is due in large part to its accessibility, as almost all people of all ages, body type, level of fitness, and income bracket can do it. It needs no special equipment, and anyone can get started with very little expense. So if you want to find out how to yoga, you can start anytime. Unlike some forms of exercise that require the purchase of special tools or equipment or a trip to the gym every time, you just need a yoga mat or some sort of cushioned mat. Your progress and the benefits you reap from yoga as an exercise and a discipline will depend on the amount of time and effort you put into it. Yoga focuses your mind, strengthens your muscles, and relaxes you. If you want to try out yoga, below are steps you could follow.

  1. Choose a yoga style. Even for beginners, there are various options to choose from depending on your taste and preference and the results you want. There are fast-paced and slow ones, there are difficult and relatively easy ones, and there are basic and fancier ones.

    Read up on the differences and find one that gives you the results you want. You can also choose to start with a yoga video that you can try in the privacy of your home. Although it is always best to start with a guided class so someone can correct you if you’re doing the poses wrong, you can just as easily research the poses on the Internet and do it on your own, especially as the beginner level uses fairly easy ones.

  2. Find a class or video on the style you choose. Ask around. Try to catch a class in progress so you can see the atmosphere and get a sense if it’s something you’d like to join. For videos, read reviews and go with the one that’s closest to what you’re looking for.

  3. Be prepared for the session. Come on time and don’t arrive famished or very full. Whether in a studio or at home, wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing that allows you to move freely and stretch unimpeded. Don’t wear shoes. Bring or rent a yoga mat. Turn off your cell phone or other possible distractions. Make sure there is space around you to be able to move freely. Whether you are with other people or alone, focus on being quiet, collected, and relaxed. Have a towel and water ready (you may drink before and after but not while the session is going on.) Tie or secure your hair especially if it’s long. Don’t talk to other people during the session.

  4. Be sure to do each pose correctly. The movements as well as the final positions are important; don’t just strive to achieve the final position but instead go through the motions properly. Pay close attention to posture and breathe deeply. If you feel pain, stop or switch to a less difficult variation.

Once you’ve decided to try yoga, get out there and do it. If you find that the experience lacks something or is not up to your expectations, figure out what changes you need and keep looking. The sooner you reap benefits from doing yoga regularly, the better it is for your well-being. When you find out how to yoga, you can see that it is not intimidating and quite doable.
