ways to contract HIV

There are many unfounded rumors on ways to contract HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, leading to AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Since HIV can only survive inside the human body, contamination through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and saliva is possibly of greatest concern when there’s bodily contact that allows the transmission or exchange of these fluids. The following circumstances are noted to be highly prone to the infection:

  1. Unprotected anal sex is at the top of the list according to a reliable source. Avert is a charitable organization in the U.K. that conducts information outreach for HIV/AIDS as their advocacy. Since the anus is not as elastic as the vagina, injuries are more likely due to the friction brought about by anal intercourse. These may be cuts, wounds, or open contusions that can become the entry of the contaminated fluid.

  2. Unprotected vaginal sex is next in line. It’s a fact that HIV contamination is high among the sexual fluids, so even traditional sex acts are not safe from the infection.

f one of the partners is an HIV carrier, the virus carried by his or her bodily fluids can enter the male partner’s body through an open wound in the penis. As per the female partner, she can easily be infected when the contaminated fluid reaches the vaginal walls.

  3. Irresponsible use of intravenous drugs has been traced to the sufficiently alarming increase of HIV/AIDS cases. Syringes and needles are personal devices and are not meant to be shared. There is a great possibility that a drop of contaminated blood left inside the needle or syringe can transfer to the next user whether used for illegal drugs or prescribed ones.

  4. Mother-to-child HIV transmission during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding is very risky without the aid of antiviral medication. Childbirth is the most dangerous phase.  The administration of Nevirapine to pregnant women by providing them with a single pill at the start of labor and a single dose of liquid Nevirapine to the baby after birth reduces the risk as does a Caesarian procedure.

  5. Oral sex is not a safe alternative to avoid HIV. When contaminated sexual fluids enter through a cut or lesion in the mouth, or when blood from a sore in the mouth of the infected person manages to find its way into the uninfected person’s system, infection can occur.

  6. Unscreened blood transfusions angered the general public when some HIV/AIDS-related cases were caused by irresponsible health workers. Stricter blood testing prevents this from happening now.

  7. Tattooing, body piercing, and other accidental needle pricks causing the contraction of HIV are diminishing due to the massive use of disposable equipment. Proper disposal of contaminated materials is also helping in a big way. Being hygienic at all times is the key to eliminate the risk of the disease in these areas. It is a must to be selective with establishments to patronize for services of these sorts.

  8. Leaving untreated injuries while playing extremely physical sports can also lead to HIV contamination when blood transfer occurs during a close fight.  The blood from the infected person transfers to the uninfected person through their injuries. This may already sound paranoid, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

The general public must be aware on ways to contract HIV as responsible adults whether it’s a high-risk possibility or not. Remember, that at the time of this article, HIV/AIDS still has no cure. Antiviral medications can only help in boosting the immune system and not eliminate
