Dementia is a mental state in which the patient experiences difficulty in controlling himself or herself. Old people should involve themselves in different activities that make them physically active and happy. Laughter is the best medicine thus, happiness must always be pursued.

  • Eat healthy foods. The person’s daily diet must be more reliant on fish rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, such as fresh salmon, sardines and mackerel. These fatty acids are good for the brain. Eat more fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables that are rich in folate, such as asparagus, bean sprouts, broccoli, spinach, turnip greens, cauliflower, lentils and beets. In particular, citrus fruits are very good in preventing dementia. Foods and drinks that contain flavonoids like cocoa, red wine and green tea are equally good choices. Foods rich in vitamin B, such as clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, shrimps and liver of almost all kinds of animals, should be incorporated into the diet regimen of the patient.

  • Play mind games and keep the brain active. Mind-twisting games, such chess, word games, playing cards and puzzles, are good forms of brain exercise. Reading and writing are also good forms of leisure for elderly people wherein the brain can be properly exercised in reasoning and logic.

  • Manage hypertension. Elderly people who are suffering from hypertension are at a high risk of contracting dementia. Thus, hypertension must be managed or be avoided by eating proper diet, taking medication and supplements and doing daily exercises. Bad cholesterol must be curved down to a normal level, while the concentration of good cholesterol in the body is increased.
