Ways to Prevent Dementia

Dementia is a mental state in which the patient experiences difficulty in controlling himself or herself. Basic day to day routines, such as changing clothing, taking a bath, going to the comfort room and other personal care are easily forgotten. Like Alzheimer’s disease, dementia has no known cure. However, its progression can be slowed down. Based on this premise, let us discuss how to prevent dementia. Dementia significantly affects the patient’s problem solving skills, communication skills and critical thinking. Likely, the patient will manifest changes in his or her behavior and personalities. Overall, it affects the afflicted person’s way of life. Medical studies and researches have been conducted, but the results were limited to how to only slow down the progression of the disorder. The treatments can range from the use of medication, natural treatment, change of lifestyle, use of supplements and regular exercise. But, why only treat the disorder or slow down its progression if there are ways to prevent it? Since prevention is better than a cure, below are the important health tips that can prevent the occurrence of dementia.

  • Exercise on a regular basis. Since dementia occurs in a later stage of a person’s life, not all forms of exercise are applicable. Thus, see a fitness guru first and ask for exercises appropriate for older people. Generally, cardiovascular exercises, such as walking, either outdoor or on a treadmill, stair climbing, stationary biking and gardening in the backyard, can help in reducing the risk of contracting dementia.

  • Live a stress-free life. Older people are not supposed to worry about their day to day living. Instead, they should enjoy every single minute of the day until they get to sleep. Take the doctor’s recommendation pertaining to the regular intake of medicines or supplements to avoid stress.

  • Change of lifestyle. The change of lifestyle must focus more on being outgoing or socially active. Interact with people not just during gatherings, but every time the opportunity presents itself. Old people should involve themselves in different activities that make them physically active and happy. Laughter is the best medicine thus, happiness must always be pursued.

  • Eat healthy foods. The person’s daily diet must be more reliant on fish rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, such as fresh salmon, sardines and mackerel. These fatty acids are good for the brain. Eat more fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables that are rich in folate, such as asparagus, bean sprouts, broccoli, spinach, turnip greens, cauliflower, lentils and beets. In particular, citrus fruits are very good in preventing dementia. Foods and drinks that contain flavonoids like cocoa, red wine and green tea are equally good choices. Foods rich in vitamin B, such as clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, shrimps and liver of almost all kinds of animals, should be incorporated into the diet regimen of the patient.

  • Play mind games and keep the brain active. Mind-twisting games, such chess, word games, playing cards and puzzles, are good forms of brain exercise. Reading and writing are also good forms of leisure for elderly people wherein the brain can be properly exercised in reasoning and logic.

  • Manage hypertension. Elderly people who are suffering from hypertension are at a high risk of contracting dementia. Thus, hypertension must be managed or be avoided by eating proper diet, taking medication and supplements and doing daily exercises. Bad cholesterol must be curved down to a normal level, while the concentration of good cholesterol in the body is increased.

  • These are the ways to prevent dementia that everyone must consider. This article serves as a guide to people getting nearer to the twilight moments of their lives. Even if dementia remains incurable, its progression can be slowed down. Just develop a healthy lifestyle from now on and stay physically active. In that way, the problem is almost solved.
