ways to treat knee pain

Knee pain is a very broad medical complaint, which can be attributed to a variety of causes. The challenge of the ways to treat knee pain largely depends on the kind of knee problem sustained. Swelling is the most common cause of knee pain. Fortunately, there are treatments available, including medication, therapy, exercise and surgery. The knees are very important in the human skeletal anatomy. They support the weight of the upper body. The knee bone joints are surrounded by cartilage in order to cushion the impact of any descending pressure. Since the knee structure is susceptible to the natural law of wear and tear, it must be properly taken care of. Below are the applicable heath tips in treating knee pain.

  1. Consult a doctor. Tell the doctor of the kind of pain that recurs, whether it is sharp or like a burning sensation. After assessing the patient’s condition, the doctor may order further medical procedures in order to determine the root cause of the knee pain. Never self-medicate because that can lead to ingestion of the wrong drugs.

  2. Take pain relievers. Anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve pain, but that does not mean that the pain will cease forever. Pain relievers classified as over-the-counter drugs may be purchased in any pharmacy. They include Advil, Nuprin and Motrin.

  3. Use injectable drugs. Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroids, usually received by the patient through injection, are drugs proven effective in relieving knee pains for months. Hyaluronic acid is a thick fluid found in healthy bone joints. This acid is injected into the damaged area of the knee to augment lubrication. Likewise, corticosteroid is injected into the knee joint in order to reduce the symptoms of arthritis and relieve knee pains.

  4. Elevate the injured knee. After performing a strenuous activity, there may be knee pain. Rest immediately to avoid further complications. Relax and elevate the aching knee by placing a pillow underneath it. If it is necessary to move from one place to another, never put much pressure on the swollen area. Use crutches to facilitate body movement without causing further pain.

  5. Use an ice cold pack. The cooling effect of ice serves as a natural anesthetic in alleviating knee pain. Using an ice cold pack at least three times a day can prevent the knee from swelling, especially if the cause of pain is injury. Let the pack stay on the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes in every application.

  6. Compress the affected area. Use an elastic medical bandage in wrapping the swollen knee. Avoid tightly wrapping the knee so as not to aggravate swelling. If the leg goes numb and a cooling sensation is felt in the surrounding tissues, the bandage is too tight. Bandage compression may be used after or before the ice pack treatment.

  7. Undergo surgery. It may be a total or partial knee replacement, or arthroscopic operation. Resorting to any of these surgical procedures can be fairly expensive. Partial knee operation involves the removal of the most damaged portion and replaces it with metal or plastic, while total replacement involves the cutting of damaged cartilage and bones and replaces them with metal alloys, polymers or high-grade plastics. According to mayoclinic.com, arthroscopy involves the removal of loose bodies from the knee joint. It also reconstructs torn ligaments and repairs impaired cartilage.

  8. Undergo therapy. This form of knee treatment is very effective after surgery in order to rehabilitate the newly operated knee. This is very common for most athletes who suffer knee-related injuries. The therapy will focus on how to strengthen the knee and leg. While going through the rehabilitation process, special forms of exercises that promote stability in the muscles surrounding the knee may be required.

Knee pain is very annoying. It can hinder the successful performance of day-to-day activities. Knee pain to whatever extent, mild or serious, should be given appropriate medical attention. As the pain recurs, sufficient knowledge on the ways to treat knee pain becomes very relevant.
